Top Ten · 05 November 2017
Collecting a Top Ten of your hometown is never an easy process. I came up with a harbour heavy Top Ten that also has quite some black and white shots in between. Hope you enjoy it - leave a comment if you like.

I search my image library from time to time to find inspiration for new blogposts. When you archive pictures of your hometown for quite some years it is fun to see what you can come up with. I wanted to do another Hamburg blogpost and I found the river Elbe in quite some pictures. The river Elbe is the lifeline of the city. It starts in the Czech Republic and ends roughly 130 km from Hamburg in the North Sea. With its 1094 km it is No. 12 in length in Europe and along the 100 longest rivers in...

Hamburg · 30 December 2016
Ok, it was not the last light of 2016 - but I came close. I went for a stroll around the harbour after finishing work for 2016 on December 30. Barely made it for sunset at Baumwall metro station and at least catched the second to last light in 2016. I love the architecture of the new installation for flood control around. It is white, clean and modern and the stairs make it way more accessible than the previous installation. I also walked down to the Überseebrücke to enjoy the view towards...

After seven years of building and ten times the planned costs the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg opens on January 11, 2017. It will hopefully serve the Hanseatic city as one of the best concert halls in the world and definitely as an architectural landmark in the middle of the Port of Hamburg. I shot this picture in December 2016 during my first time on the Elbphilharmonie plaza. This picture even got featured on Instagram by @Elbphilharmonie and received way more than 1.300 likes. A few weeks...

Photography Tips · 13 December 2015
I wanted to come up with a small series of pictures done differently. During a recent afternoon photo walk along Hamburg harbour I took my small Manfrotto table tripod (Pixi Mini) with me. It is only 20 cm high and gives a stable, but very low perspective. Every image below is done from this tripod slightly above street level and shoot with the Canon EF 16-35 mm wide angle. I really like this different approach of an area that I shot many times before. Since we had the typical December weather...

I love long exposures and shooting on tripods. Every other year Hamburg features the Blue Port. Parts of the harbour are then lit in blue for about ten days. A perfect time for photographers to take pictures of their city in a different vibe.

Hamburg · 09 July 2015
In July 2015 I had the opportunity to attend the Christening ceremony of the CMA CGM Georg Forster at the harbour of Hamburg. It is one of the largest container vessels of the world carrying more than 18.000 TEU. One had a chance to visit the ship and Even visit the bridge. You will find some of the pics below. It took us quite a while walking up the staircase to the very top where the bridge is. Afterwards the Christening ceremony itself took place with roughly 500 guests. The weather was...
08 March 2015
After a very sunny day in March 2015 I managed to get to the Harbour Museum Hamburg during sunset. It is located at the "50er Schuppen", a couple of ware houses from the 1950s south of "HafenCity" in Hamburg. You will see who ships were loaded and unloaded back then. The old cranes are especially impressive.

Going westwards along the river Elbe is one of the most scenic walks in Hamburg. This is especially true during sunset since you are walking towards the sunset. I quite like the area at Altonaer Hafen since it is definitely less crowded than the Alster lake walk or the inner city region. You pass the famous Dockland office building which is shaped like a parallelogram. Opposite of the building they left an old harbour crane giving a nice contrast towards the modern glass and steel buildings....
